Rutgers Commit DE Justin Nelson

Rutgers Commit DE Justin Nelson

As an eighth grader, identified defensive end/outside linebacker Justin Nelson as a standout performer at the Chuck Mound Combine at the Meadowland Complex. At the event, Nelson consistently won his one-on-one battles with high school age offensive linemen. Although he was approximately 6-foot-0 tall and 210-pounds, the necessary quickness and strength along with the competitive nature and aggressive needed to play on the collegiate level. Now at 6-foot-2 and 240-pounds, he will take his skills to Rutgers after making his pledge on Wednesday.

“I made the final decision today in a meeting with my mom, my dad, and Coach Flood”, he said. “I love Rutgers. I love the players, the coaches, the trainers, the academic support and everything as a whole. I just feel it's the perfect fit for me”.

Although the Knights play an aggressive style of defense which incorporates a lot of blitzing and stunting of the defensive line, they need a person who can apply pressure as a one-on-one pass rusher. Nelson has the ability to answer this need as he is able to pressure the passer and drop in coverage to take away receivers in the flat. He is a very welcomed addition to the Knights’ 2014 class and reason why Coach Flood was overjoyed by his commitment.

“Coach Flood was extremely happy. He immediately informed the whole coaching staff. I was embraced”, he said.

Now that Nelson has committed to Rutgers, he will focus on his academics and attempt to gather more players into the 2014 class.

“It feels actually good to end the process. Now I’m focused on my grades and bringing a state championship back home to DePaul. I know other players like Kiy Hester, Shamir Bearfield, Almamy Conde and a few other guys contacted me to congratulate me on the commitment who I would like to see if they can join me at Rutgers”, he stated.
